We found her when we came home from work at 4 o'clock in the morning (temporarily working the night shift). She was in the road outside our driveway. At first we thought she'd been hit by a car, but the next day we found her collar, her fur, and blood in the driveway quite a distance from the spot where we found her body. We believe she was killed by a coyote, mountain lion, or bobcat. We think we frightened the predator as we drove up, although we didn't see it. She was still warm when we found her, and we imagine we never would have found her if we hadn't pulled up at that moment.

Pixel was a small manx who was born on a farm in Michigan. She moved with us to Colorado, riding in the cab of the UHaul between me and Steve. She was semi-wild, even though she was an indoor cat for her first two years. Only in her third year did she stop biting and violently attacking us on a regular basis. We probably loved her even more due to the challenge of being her friend. She had more grace, speed, and skill than I have seen in any cat before. I found her exquisitely beautiful, which made her an odd sort of cat: look but don't touch! But if she loved you, she would grace you with surprising expressions of affection, and it was all worth it.
